I’ve been using amplifiers from QSC for over ten years, great products that are built to withstand the abuse of the road---but sound good enough for even the most discriminating ears in the field. But I’ll be the first to say that when it comes powered speakers or speakers in general for live sound, QSC has never been a name I would personally think of---UNTIL NOW! I’ve listened and used many speakers and while I’m not saying the QSC’s are the best out there, but I feel they are at this price point. I’m absolutely blown away at the performance and sound I”m hearing. The new K12 is absolutely stunning in both sound quality as well as power (1,000 watts of power). But even more unbelievable than the sound and performance of the QSC K12 is the low price. In fact, the K12 is priced well under competing products---so this will be interesting to see how the field changes. The advanced DSP algorithms built-in allow for levels of performance the belie the system’s weight and size. In other words, this isn’t just a power amp built into a speaker but rather it’s a complete system that has been heavily designed, engineered, and tuned to give the best performance and sound that shouldn’t be possible in a box this size with this low of a price. The clarity in the mids cuts through without losing the original mix while the highs are quite appealing. Listening to other speakers in this price range (or more), it’s much more appealing to the ear.
INTRINSIC CORRECTION
Developed for QSC concert line-arrays, the Intrinsic Correction process is where QSC takes extensive measurements and calculations of sound with on and off axis reflections that makes corrections in the DSP to account for all of the issues that have taken place. In other words, the DSP helps to make the speaker sound the same no matter where your listener is standing out in the crowd. DEEP
Digital Extension & Excursion Processing is a process developed by QSC that is used to achieve ultra low-frequency content that, again, you wouldn’t expect out of this kind of box. There’s a difference between adding low-end EQ v/s enhancing the low frequency that is already there. By adding EQ, you’re changing the frequency response and phase of the signal---which can also cause “woof-out” where the speaker can’t handle the bottom-end frequency and therefor distorts. But through the DEEP process by QSC, the speaker has been tuned and enhanced to take the low frequency that is there and make it audible without phase, without distorting, and without creating additional artifacts. It’s like having an Aphex Big Bottom built-in, almost anyway. There is a selection switch on the back allowing you to engage DEEP for a solo box or with a subwoofer, but you can also just turn it off if you don’t wish to use it. I like this--a manufacturer that allows the user to use the product how they wish to.
One of the features I really like about this speaker is the power LED on the front of the speaker. With nearly all speakers, this lights up letting you know that the speaker is on but personally I find that to be HIGHLY ANNOYING!!! QSC allows you, via a remote control or switch), to turn this off---making it great when using the QSC K12 in an array configuration . The LED can also be configured to act as a limiter, showing you when the protective limiter is engaged to keep from damaging the speaker components. The K12 also has a power stand-by mode that allows the speaker to “sleep”, but “wake-up” when it sees audio signal. This is great for installations where you don’t have access to the speakers, but do not wish to install a remote power sequence. Another feature that I find highly useful for the working musician is the ability to tilt the speaker by roughly 7 degrees forward. When you mount speakers up on a stand, they are generally going to go over the listeners ears---but the ability to tile the speakers allows the performers to aim the speakers to where it matters most.....TO YOUR AUDIENCE.
At 1,000 watts of program power, this box aint no wuss nor is it meant for weak audio...but whether you’re running at the full 1,000 watts of power or barely pushing 200 watts, the QSC K12 sounds the same across all frequencies at all audible amplitudes. Most speakers will breakup when you get anywhere near the max gain, or even half at times. Some speakers sound significantly better at lower audible levels than others, but not so with the QSC. In other words, this box is highly tuned to fully perform no matter how you push them.
