PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS FROM PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
IEM’ (In Ear Monitors) have changed radically over the past 15-years that I’ve been using them. But I’d have to say that the biggest change I’ve noticed over the years is, quite possibly, just how many people are using them these days---AND the vast array of those that do use them. There are many levels of IEM systems both in price and features.....and like all things, you DO get what you pay for. The best system on the market is the Shure PSM700 series. Capable of working in any environment including the theatre district on Broadway, the PSM700 has no equal as I see it which is a main reason why we do use them at my church. But the PSM700 is for a different level of user which doesn’t mean it’s for every one. The reason we do use the PSM700 at my church is we’re doing broadcast and have a LARGE system in conjunction with a dozen channels of wireless microphones. Shure has an entire product range that covers any level of user both in needs and sound quality. But with no dis-respect to Shure, the ATM3M from Audio Technica is just an incredible value of price, performance, and audio quality. With the ability to mount a single receiver in a standard rackmount or to mount two side by side, up to (16) channels of use, long battery life, easy to program, and so many other features----you’ll find out why I like this so much.
One of the advantages of not being first in the game provides the ability to look at the current market and find ways to improve it. Of course there are also those manufacturers that build a “me too” product---but this aint one of ‘em! To me, price is secondary when it comes to purchasing a product. Okay, let me explain this.... price is important, we all have our budget that we have to keep in mind, right? However understand that regardless of the price of a product, if you’re not happy with the sonic quality or the end result--is it really a good deal? Seriously---cutting corners in your quality of gear just to a hit a price point doesn’t make one happy for the long term. Fortunately with the Audio Technica ATM3M you don’t have to compromise on either price or performance! With up to 1,321 selectable frequencies in the UHF band range of 614.000MHz to 647.000MHz, you can safely use up to (16) different transmitters safely---depending upon your location of course. While in most cases you can have a full (16) different channels, the reality is most of the users will need (4) - (6) channels of transmission. For example, a typical rock band will consist of the DRUMMER, LEAD GUITAR, RHYTHM GUITAR, BASS GUITAR, KEYBOARDS (sometimes), and LEAD VOCAL. Some of the cheaper IEM solutions only allow for (4) systems to be used which is certainly an issue. Okay, you can have AS MANY RECEIVERS AS YOU WANT---but we’re talking transmitters here. What’s the difference? CLICK HERE for more information..... Clearly, the ATM3M is capable of providing a distinct mix for each member of the band, providing your mixing console can support it! If you are with a rock band playing the typical gigs---check this one out! ANYWAY.....
But how does it sound? While sound IS subjective, you’d have to have the ears of a bat not to like the sound of the Audio Technica ATM3M system. The earbuds that come with it are very good, but you’re free to use any earbud solution you with including custom-ear molds. But this does bring up an important question of sound quality and really, it’s more of a myth than anything else. To transmit a wireless audio signal, you must compress the sound. Honestly, this isn’t much of an issue but those with very good ears can certainly tell the difference with lower level and higher level systems and that is one of the major advantages to the Audio Technica ATM3M IEM. Sonically, no it’s not the best---but it sure is far far far from bad. In fact, I think it is one of the better sounding IEM solutions yet is half the cost of one of the biggest competitors. A feature that no one else has is the Auxillary Input allowing for the connection of a lavalier microphone right into the bodypack. Why is this a feature that is desired? Well the real question is, WHY HASN’T ANYONE ELSE DONE IT? When you connect your earbuds, the sound around you is cut-out (again, refer here) including ambience and even direct communication. This is actually the main reason that turns some off of the IEM solutions is the feel “out of touch” with everyone. By connecting a lavalier microphone into the bodypack receiver, it picks up the surrounding ambience as well as speech of those standing right in-front of you---allowing a normal conversation and not feeling “out of the loop”.
I’ve designed MANY wireless systems both in microphones as well as wireless IEM solutions of all levels and scales. I’ve worked with every major solution out there on different scales as well. With that said--I truly believe that the Audio Technica ATM3M is a wonderful solution to any level of user for any scale system, but it’s ideal for the working band and working musicians that want a top quality solution without having to pay a top quality price.
